MADISON, Wis. — More Wisconsinites will be able to receive the monkeypox vaccine.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced Tuesday that it would expand eligibility for the shot to more people. The move comes as 63 cases have been identified in the state, almost 98% in men.
There are currently 58 sites across the state that administer the vaccine. DHS Secretary-designee Karen Timberlake said that expanding eligibility will help stop the spread of the disease.
“It is encouraging to see that the rate of new monkeypox infections is slowing,” Timberlake said. “This decision allows for even more Wisconsinites to protect themselves against monkeypox.”
The following people are now eligible for the vaccine:
- Known contacts
- Presumed contacts who:
- Know that a sexual partner was diagnosed with monkeypox in the last 14 days
- Attended an event or venue with known monkeypox exposure
- Members of the LGBTQ+ community who have sex with men or non-binary people who have had multiple sexual partners in the last 14 days
- People who are at an elevated risk of exposure:
- Members of the LGBTQ+ community who have sex with men or non-binary people who expect to have multiple sex partners
- Clinical laboratory personnel who perform testing to diagnose orthopoxviruses including monkeypox
- Research laboratory workers who handle orthopoxviruses including monkeypox
- Certain health care providers who work in sexual health clinics or other settings that directly care for patients with STIs.
