The deputy found the man on Cumberland Avenue in the town of Strongs Prairie and approached him; it was at that point the deputy found the man was armed. The deputy shot the man, who died at the scene, the justice department said in a news release.
According to the release, the deputy was wearing a body camera at the time.
The release did not provide details about why the deputy shot the man or how many shots they fired. Police found a gun at the scene.
The deputy is now on administrative assignment per department policy. The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting, and all involved law enforcement agencies are cooperating, the release said.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office did not provide a response for comment, instead directing News 3 Now to the Department of Justice.
