MADISON, Wis. — One week into the new semester, Madison schools remain understaffed.
As of Friday, the Madison Metropolitan School District still had 257 vacancies, including 130 teaching vacancies across 53 schools, according to spokesperson Time LeMonds. That’s nearly 5% of MMSD’s workforce. LeMonds said the district had about 100 job offers out to teaching and non-teaching candidates and that the number of offers fluctuates daily.

The staffing crunch is impacting multiple aspects of everyday operations in the district, including food services. However, LeMonds said that MMSD’s Food Services Department schedules staff so that one school isn’t more impacted than another.
That doesn’t mean that things have gone off without a hitch. LeMonds said that a delivery from one of the district’s food vendors did not arrive last week, forcing staff to make alternate plans to ensure students were fed.
LeMonds also said that school staff has stepped up to help during lunchtime, however, “the district is not aware of any circumstance where a teacher was required to prepare or serve lunch to students.”
