PORTAGE, Wis. — An investment from the federal government will help cover the costs of upgrades to some bridges in Columbia County.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation got an $80 million windfall from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which President Biden signed into law last November. That money will go towards replacing the I-39/90/94 bridge that crosses the Wisconsin River.
Senator Tammy Baldwin announced the investment Tuesday, saying that replacing the bridge will make the area safer and strengthen the supply chain.
The current bridge will be replaced by two new bridges meant to serve traffic in opposite directions. The bridges along CTH U and CTH V that cross the river will also be replaced.
The release from Baldwin’s office did not say when construction could happen.
