MADISON, Wis. — Local veterans who fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars returned home Saturday night after a special day trip to America’s capital.
The veterans were part of the 43rd Badger Honor Flight, which gives those who fought for America a chance to see the landmarks that have been built in their honor. Everything, from transportation to food, was free for the veterans because of their service to the U.S.
“When the Vietnam era ended, there wasn’t a welcome back celebration. A lot of us had to change into clean clothes before stepping off the airplane,” one veteran said. “This is kind of like a welcome home.”
This weekend’s flight left Dane County Regional Airport just after 5 a.m. on Saturday and returned just before 10 p.m. The next Honor Flight is scheduled for October 11.
