MADISON, Wis. — A fire at a Madison condo was put out quickly by an automatic fire sprinkler, Fire Department officials said.
Firefighters were sent to the 5300 block of Congress Avenue at around 5:40 p.m. Thursday. A small fire was found contained to a pan on the stovetop.
Officials said the resident was heating vegetable oil when it ignited. The resident instinctively put water on the fire, which only made the flames worse.
The fire triggered an automatic sprinkler which put out the flames before firefighters arrived.
Smoke damage to the kitchen was minimal, and there was no damage to the nearby countertops and cabinets. The exhaust vent above the stove was damaged by the fire.
The condo was ventilated and crews cleaned out some water from the sprinkler.
