MADISON, Wis.– A group of 90 veterans from South-Central Wisconsin took off to Washington, D.C., early Tuesday morning as a part of the 44th Badger Honor Flight.
The veterans will tour several memorials in D.C. as part of a daylong V.I.P. excursion. This flight includes veterans from both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
For many veterans, the welcome home they will receive Tuesday night at the Dane County Regional Airport will be decades in the making.
“I think today when they come back, they’re going to find a much more welcoming atmosphere than they did 50 years ago,” Vietnam War veteran Wendell Fenstermann said. “I think a lot of these veterans deserve that and I think it’s been a long time coming.”
Tuesday’s flight is being funded by donations raised by Kopke’s Greenhouse’s annual fundraiser.
Badger Honor Flight has flown 3,806 veterans to Washington D.C. to date.
The welcome home celebration begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Dane County Regional Airport.
