MADISON, Wis. — A bird flu case was identified in St. Croix County, state officials announced Monday.
Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection officials said a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza was found in a backyard flock, though the exact location of the flock was not given.
Bird flu is highly contagious and often deadly to domestic birds. Officials said the disease can spread through contact with infected birds, equipment and clothing worn by people working with animals.
The disease has been identified in 16 counties in the state this year, including Dane County. In March, the Henry Vilas Zoo closed its aviary in order to protect its birds from the disease.
When a flock is infected with bird flu, it is depopulated in order to stop the spread.
