LA CROSSE (WKBT) — A new CDC report says that four out of five pregnancy deaths are preventable.
The majority of pregnancy-related deaths occur well after delivery and some of the leading causes are linked to mental health conditions.
Doctors at Mayo Clinic Health System say it is important to screen mothers for anxiety and depression because symptoms can occur any time after delivery.
“It can present even weeks to months later,” said Dr. Rebecca Scarseth of Mayo Clinic Health System. “It’s not just immediately after delivery or even within the first six weeks or twelve weeks, it can be months after the delivery.”
Scarseth says Mayo Clinic will provide patients with social workers or behavioral health physicians if needed and that the ultimate goal is to ensure mothers and babies go home healthy and happy.
