MADISON, Wis. — Local leaders in community-based youth organizations held a panel discussion Wednesday highlighting the importance of youth connection and engagement with positive adults in the community.
Speakers stressed it’s important that kids find positive, meaningful connections to reduce the possibility of future violence.
Megan Woodward from Madison’s Dr. Virginia Henderson Elementary School offered some tips on how teachers can connect with kids who may be disengaged.
“Here at Henderson Elementary, we have kids that help deliver lunches, kids that have specific point people that they connect with daily,” she said. “I think that doing small things to build relationships with kids is key.”
Other speakers suggest teachers take five to ten minutes out of their days to allow students to process things using methods like breathing exercises or writing prompts.
