MADISON, Wis. — GroupHealth Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin is awarding three local college students scholarships as part of a program to reduce racial disparities in healthcare.
The Pre-Professional Medical Diversity Scholarship aims to recruit healthcare workers with diverse backgrounds to reduce disparities.
Each recipient — Ahmed Ibrahim, Duncan Asaka and Salma Salama — will receive $5,000 and a chance to shadow at GHC-SCW.
Applicants submitted essays about the importance of diverse healthcare providers in diverse communities.
“I believe Black men make up roughly 2% of all physicians in the country,” Ibrahim said. “Just to know that I have this type of support in my pursuit of higher medical education means a lot and definitely helps me remember why I decided to go on this path in the first place, in order to be the change I want to see in my community.”
The scholarship program is open to students who identify as Black, Indigenous or Hispanic and are currently enrolled in medical school or physician assistant and nurse practitioner programs in the state. Those in a residency program are also included.
