HARTLAND, Wis. (WISC/AP) — The two adults and four children found dead following an apartment fire in Hartland late last week each suffered a single gunshot wound, officials said Monday evening.
Speaking to reporters Monday evening, Hartland Police Chief Torin Misko said all six were members of the same blended family. They lived together in one apartment of the four-unit building in Hartland, police said in a statement Sunday.
The adults who died were Connor McKisick and Jessica McKisick. The children were identified as a 14-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl and two 3-year-old boys. Their names were not disclosed.
Misko said Connor McKisick’s gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted.
Officials are still working to determine a timeline of events and a cause of the fire, but Misko said investigators found “evidence of an ignitable liquid in the apartment where it normally would not be located.”
It was not clear if the victims died from their respective gunshot wounds, the fire or a combination of the two.
Misko said there is no continued danger to the community and that police are not searching for any other persons of interest in the case.
Multiple fire departments and police departments responded and helped evacuate tenants from the building and from apartment balconies, Misko said.
A total of 10 people were displaced by the fire, including two families of four and an adult couple, American Red Cross spokesman Justin Kern said.
Hartland is a village of approximately 9,100 people about 26 miles west of Milwaukee.
