MADISON, Wis. — Americans are expected to see their winter energy bills go up an average of 35% this year. So in one of America’s most frigid states, how can you save this season?
According to Dave Jones, Inc.’s Erik Crebs, it’s a no-brainer.
“The number one thing is filters,” he said. “We go in and find filters that are plugged, and that’s hard on your blower motor, that’s hard on everything.”
For those on a budget or willing to go the do-it-yourself route, “your best money is spent on insulation and windows,” Crebs said. “You can have the most efficient furnace in the world, but if it’s running 24/7, it’s not going be that efficient, so if you can seal your house up, insulate, maybe put plastic over the windows, attic insulation is probably the number one key because all that air just goes right up and out.”

When every penny counts, what kind of lights a home uses can also make a difference. To help residents, Focus on Energy offers a program that can help people upgrade for free.
“We partner with Wisconsin utilities, and every year we offer any Wisconsin resident who has a Wisconsin utility a free energy pack, and it has LED lights, there’s five actually, some of them have shower heads or electrical strips, and so you can get one a year,” said Ron Giordan, Focus on Energy’s public relations manager.
Focus on Energy can also provide a full assessment of a home’s energy consumption.
