FITCHBURG, Wis. — Fitchburg police issued a notice Friday to remind the public that local authorities — like police, judges, and lawyers — will never contact residents asking for money.
The warning came following a series of calls with the scammers claiming to be some sort of authority figure who claimed the call recipient’s family member has been arrested. The scammers then demand large amounts of money to pay for a cash bond to free them.
Many of the calls have targeted senior citizens, according to Fitchburg police.
In addition to never asking the public for money, police said the State of Wisconsin does not use bail bondsmen in any cases.
Police suggested that any time a phone call seems wrong of fraudulent, the safest choice is to hang up. If any residents have safety or welfare concerns, it’s a good idea to call your local police department.
