MADISON, Wis. — A home on Madison’s west side was evacuated overnight after a resident reported a strong smell of natural gas inside their house.
Fire officials said they smelled a strong odor of natural gas from the street when they responded to Geneva Circle around 1:50 a.m.
Crews found a “significant” leak coming from an exterior pipe leading to the home’s gas meter. Firefighters said they also found “dangerous levels” of natural gas inside the home when they used an air monitor just inside the front doorway.
Firefighters quickly shut off the gas supply to stop the leak before opening up the front and back doors of the house to ventilate the building.
After setting up a fan to blow the natural gas out of the home, crews were able to enter the building to ventilate all of the other rooms.
Madison Gas & Electric helped with a final walk-through of the house to make sure no natural gas remained. Energy crews also worked to repair the leak which later allowed the resident to re-enter the home.
