Bryan Steil wins race for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District

JANESVILLE, Wis. — Rep. Bryan Steil is headed back to Washington, D.C., to represent Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District.

The Associated Press called the race in Steil’s favor just before 11:30 p.m. Steil won with 55% over Democratic challenger Ann Roe at 44% and Charles Barman at 0.8% as of 11:30 p.m.

“I am grateful for the continued support of the voters of Wisconsin’s First District,” Steil said in a statement late Tuesday night. “I will continue working for the people of Wisconsin. It is harder and harder for families to get by as workers and seniors are clobbered by rising costs. Communities have become less safe. It’s time to get our country back on track. I’m focused on bringing costs down and making our communities safe.”

Steil was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 after beating Democrat Randy Bryce. Steil succeeded former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who retired.

Born and raised in Janesville, Steil worked as Ryan’s aide and later worked in the manufacturing industry. He was appointed to the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents by then-Governor Scott Walker in 2016.

Roe also calls Janesville home, having lived there for nearly three decades. A newcomer to politics, Roe serves as the president of the business association Downtown Janesville Inc.

This year’s campaign took a new twist after Wisconsin’s state legislature redrew the state’s district map. Beloit, which had previously been in the 2nd District, joined cities like Racine, Kenosha and Janesville in the 1st district, giving candidates a new group of voters to connect with.
