Van Orden will replace Democrat Rep. Ron Kind, who has represented the 3rd District since 1997. Kind announced last year that he would not seek reelection.
Pfaff represented Wisconsin’s 32nd District in the State Senate since January of last year and was secretary-designee of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection in 2019. He also worked on Kind’s staff for 12 years.
Van Orden is a retired Navy SEAL who served in the military for 26 years. After his military service, he appeared in multiple films and wrote a book. He received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump last year.
Van Orden came under fire during the campaign for his presence at the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 riots. Van Orden said he left the area “when it became clear that a protest had become a mob.” He also declined to debate Pfaff.
