MADISON, Wis. — The race for mayor is officially underway in Madison as former Madison Metropolitan School District board president Gloria Reyes has filed paperwork to run in next spring’s election, records show.
The City of Madison’s 2023 Candidate Filings page shows Reyes has filed her Declaration of Candidacy, signaling her intention to run.
Reyes served on Madison’s school board from April 2018 to April 2021, and was the first Latina ever elected to the MMSD board before ultimately becoming board president. She also served as Deputy Mayor under former Mayor Paul Soglin after previously working as an officer and detective in the Madison Police Department.
Earlier this week, Reyes announced a special announcement coming at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Reyes is the first person to officially declare their candidacy for mayor. Former Mayor Paul Soglin told News 3 Now on Thursday he is not considering another run.
Campaign staff for Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway indicated in an e-mail to News 3 Now that she plans to run for re-election.
“The mayor loves her job and isn’t planning on going anywhere. She’s working on delivering a balanced budget that focuses on our city’s priorities and will have an official announcement at a more appropriate time,” the e-mail said.
