MADISON, Wis. — The temperatures may have been chilly but the snow and rain stayed away, providing a good atmosphere for Sunday’s Madison Marathon.
Runners started their day early and had just six hours to complete the course. A half-marathon and 10K were also available for runners looking for a lighter challenge. The starting and finishing lines were both at Capitol Square.
In the end, it was 30-year-old Martin Erl of Brookfield who crossed the finish line first with a time just under 2:25:00. Milwaukee runner Jenny Zwagerman, 36, finished first for the women, with a time of 2:51:11.34.
Organizers said the event gives a big boost to the community.
“The Madison Marathon will provide an economic impact of between $500,000-$600,000, so it’s just really nice to have these events again back downtown,” Madison Festivals Inc. president Sara Klemme said. “Not only do you have all the runners that are accomplishing these major goals, but you have all these supporters out here cheering them on.”
Finishers also got to enjoy some goodies at the end of the race. All participants received a post-run meal, a long-sleeve shirt, race photos and a medal. Runners 21 and older were also treated to a post-run beer.
The marathon had over 1000 finishers from ages ranging 16 to 77.
