MADISON, Wis. — Madison police are investigating after a man was killed in a shooting near John Nolen Drive Tuesday afternoon.
According to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, several people reported hearing shots fired in the area of Lakeside Street and John Nolen Drive around 1:15 p.m. following an altercation between two people MPD officials believe knew each other.
Barnes said the shooting was targeted and does not believe the community is in any danger. The suspect was still at large as of 3:30 p.m.; Madison police did not provide a description of the shooter.
The victim was described as a Black man in his 30s. His identity will be released by the Dane County Medical Examiner after his autopsy is completed and the victim’s family members are notified.
When police got to the scene, they found a man with a gunshot wound; he was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
“It’s important to note that officers were here within one minute of that call being out,” Barnes said. “They gave, rendered aid to this person, and that person was able to be transported to an area hospital where unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries.”
Construction workers in the area reportedly heard the altercation prior to the shooting. Both the victim and alleged shooter had been riding in the same vehicle prior to the shooting and ultimately stopped in the 100 block of Lakeside Street before they started fighting.
MPD officials are relying on the community as a whole to “be our eyes and ears” as they continue to search for the shooter. Detectives are actively knocking on doors and reviewing video footage to learn more. Barnes said he’s also asking any area residents who heard or saw something to share that information with investigators.
“Nowhere is this OK. So, it doesn’t matter whether this incident occurred here or whether this incident occurred in my neighborhood,” Barnes said. “It’s never OK. And so that’s really my message for everyone: This type of violence is not OK in Madison.”
Nearby Franklin Elementary School was temporarily put in a “secure” status following the shooting. Lakeside Street has since reopened.
Kazue Kaisershot, who has lived near where the shooting happened for two decades, said it’s unsettling that an incident of that nature happened so close to home.
“It’s never happening in this neighborhood,” she said.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that Madison police described the shooter as a Black man in his 30s; the story has been updated to reflect that officials have not shared any identifying details about the suspect.
