MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin State Historical Museum opened exhibits for one final time on Sunday as it prepares for a big move.
The museum will pack its artifacts into storage as a new, state-of-the-art history center is constructed on the site of the current museum. The new center is expected to be completed by 2026.
Museum staff said the current space is too small to display all of Wisconsin’s stories and collections.
“We’ve got some fantastic things in our collection now, such as the canoes that were brought up from Lake Mendota that couldn’t be on display here, but that we think we be on display at the new history center,” museum deputy director Mike Hollander said. “we’re bringing in some new objects, some of the favorites on display here we’ll show off in that new history center. And so It’ll be a mix of old and new stuff.”
The museum’s retail store will remain open throughout the holiday season and into next year.
