MADISON, Wis. — Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway traveled to Africa on Sunday to visit one of Madison’s sister cities.
The mayor, along with a delegation, will speak with leaders in the City of Kanifing, The Gambia. Wisconsin State Rep. Samba Baldeh, who is a native of The Gambia, organized the trip.
“I am proud to bring together the people of The Gambia — the nation of my birth — with my friends and colleagues of my adopted home and the City of Madison,” Baldeh said. “I know we will have much to learn from each other.”
Madison and Kanifing began a sister city relationship in 2016, thanks in part to efforts by Baldeh. Kanifing is one of Madison’s nine sister cities worldwide including Freiburg, Germany; and Mantova, Italy.
“I am happy to be leading this group to visit with our friends in Kanifing,” Rhodes-Conway said. “We are in an era where building global relationships and understanding is vital.”
Rhodes-Conway will spend her time in The Gambia speaking with Kanifing Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, former mayor Rohey Malick Lowe and Gambian President Adama Barrow.
