MADISON, Wis. — Madison police said one person was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon following a shooting on State Street.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said officers responded to the 100 block of State Street just after 3:30 p.m. for a report of a shooting. When officers got to the scene, they found a man who had been shot at least once. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Barnes said the victim was conscious and alert when officers made contact.
Officers were sent to the 100 block of State Street just after 3:30 p.m. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said the victim was hit with at least one bullet and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Barnes said there was “some type of altercation” that led to the shooting, though the details around that altercation were not immediately clear. The suspect reportedly ran from the scene after the shooting and has not yet been identified.
An eyewitness told News 3 Now he saw a man shoot another person several times at nearly point-blank range.
“It would be a miracle” if the victim is alive, Jason Stein said. He witnessed the shooting from several floors up on W. Mifflin Street.
“What struck me about it was the shooter continued to shoot after the victim was down and after the point at which he could’ve stopped. I don’t know what precipitated it, but the victim was clearly not a threat at that point,” Stein told News 3 Now.
The scene remains active and no arrests have been made.
“Someone had a weapon. They fired that weapon in public. So, we should all be concerned about that,” Barnes said, but added there is no reason to believe those in the immediate area of the shooting are in danger.
The public is asked to avoid the area at this time as police search for a suspect.
“The detectives are working really feverishly, trying to piece together what may have happened,” Barnes said. “We have a victim, again, who is undergoing treatment, who is unable to tell us what happened, so we need the public’s help in making sure that whatever happened here today, we can bring to a resolution.”
Barnes said the Capitol Police are helping with the investigation, offering video camera feeds from the area and sending detectives to help MPD with the case.
