MADISON, Wis. — Calling all weather enthusiasts: the 11th annual Mendota Freeze Contest is now underway.
The Clean Lakes Alliance is again hosting the contest for people to guess when Madison’s largest lake will freeze over. People who guess the correct date will be entered to win a $1,000 Lands End gift card.
“The Clean Lakes Alliance doesn’t make the call on when the lake is frozen; that job is up to the State Climatology Office, and they have been doing it for 170 years so they have a really great set of data,” marketing and development director Adam Sodersten explained. “They still rely on the same analog ways. It’s not drones or satellites; they drive around the lake and look for those point-to-point things: can you row a boat between Picnic Point and Maple Bluff to deliver a case of beer?”
Last winter, the lake officially froze on Jan. 7. The median freeze date is Dec. 20.
