MADISON, Wis. — Work is underway to prepare Madison’s outdoor skating rinks for the winter season, but don’t pull out the skates just yet.
The various ice rinks across the city are in differing stages of assembly, but until temperatures fall a bit more they won’t be ready for action. So far, there’s no set date as to when they’ll open.
“We always need an assist from Mother Nature,” said Chad Hughes, the west parks supervisor for the city’s parks department. “We always try to have the ice rinks open by the start of winter break for Madison-area schools, but again that’s just a date we shoot for and we definitely need an assist from the weather to be able to do that.”
The best weather to make ice, Hughes added, includes “cold nights, days below freezing as well, cloudy but dry.”
Once the rinks reopen, they will be open to the public for free with no reservations required.
