MADISON, Wis. — The second-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team is Sweet 16 bound for the 10th straight season after sweeping TCU Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Sarah Franklin led all players with 13 kills, as Anna Smrek and Devyn Robinson each added six. The Badgers also extend their win streak to 20 straight matches.
The Badgers also held their opponents to 15 points or less for a fourth-straight set Saturday, holding TCU to 9 points in the first frame and 11 in the second.
TCU was error-prone throughout the match, committing 28 attacking errors and conceding 6 aces. The Badgers committed just 4 errors on 76 attempts. Wisconsin also dominated at the net, posting 11 blocks to TCU’s 2. Danielle Hart recorded 5 blocks, and Robinson and Julia Orzol each added 4.
Wisconsin will host regionals at the UW Field House this coming week. In their regional semifinal on Thursday, the Badgers will take on Big Ten rival Penn State – a team they beat twice during the regular season.
Penn State was almost as dominant in their run to the Sweet 16 as Wisconsin, dropping only one set over their first and second round matches.
The Big Ten is incredibly well-represented at this stage of the NCAA Tournament, with five teams making up the remaining field. That’s more than any other conference.
