MADISON, Wis. — The holidays are a joyful time of year. But with boxes, ribbons and wrapping paper galore it can also be a messy one.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources offered some tips Wednesday on how to have fun during the holiday season while helping the environment.
Most holiday items like cardboard, plastic containers and wrapping paper can be put in your recycling bin. Just make sure wrapping paper doesn’t have any glitter, foil or other adornments.
You can also recycle items such as newspapers, magazines, aluminum and tin cans, and glass bottles. Don’t crush cans before placing them in bins, as that makes it harder for equipment at recycling facilities to properly recognize and sort them.
There are some items that cannot go in recycling bins. These include tissue paper, holiday lights, plastic bags and wraps, batteries and electronics.
The fun of the season doesn’t stop with what’s under the tree. You can also protect the environment by being mindful about food during the holidays.
Check food date labels to make sure they’re actually unsafe. Some items from last year may still be good, which can save you a trip to the grocery store. Make sure to examine food yourself before eating or cooking with it.
If you do have to grocery shop, make a plan before you go. After you eat, store food correctly to extend its life.
