MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin–Madison Police Department tested new AI security screening technology on campus on Sunday, using products created by Liberty Defense.
UWPD Infrastructure Security Lieutenant Jeff Ellis says he hopes this kind of project could eventually relieve people of the nerves of going into a big event space.
“Big crowds and and big venues are places that people worry about,” said Ellis. “Hopefully this is a way to eliminate that.”
The screening’s name is HEXWAVE. This developing technology differs from some other AI-powered weapons detection systems in that it uses radio frequency and millimeter-wave sensing, rather than the measurement of magnetic fields.
Tom McIntyre is the Director of Sales with Liberty Defense. He explained that the technology is able to expand the devices security is able to see.
“We scan for not only metallic threats, like guns and knives, but also non-metallic threats, like 3D printed guns, plastic pipe bombs, liquids, and powders,” said McIntyre.
The testing took place at a wrestling event in the UW Field House as the primary security screening.
Both Liberty Defense and the UW-Madison Police Department share a similar goal of keeping the focus on sitting in the stands, and keeping people less worried about their safety.
“It ensures that we’re providing a safe environment at all our sporting events, it’s a quick screen, you don’t have to slow down to go through it, hopefully it just enhances and ensures everybody is feeling more safe as they move throughout the day.”
Liberty Defense is just testing out the technology at the Field House. Wisconsin Athletics does not have any plans to use this technology in all it’s facilities at this time.
