PORTAGE, Wis. — A Poynette man charged with leaving a loaded gun out which later led to a 7-year-old girl being shot in the leg by another child was sentenced Wednesday to 10 days in jail.
Andrew Long, 20, was found guilty on one count of leaving a loaded firearm near a child after he entered a no-contest plea. Prosecutors also dismissed a possession of drug paraphernalia charge from Long’s case during his sentencing hearing.
Long was also granted Huber privileges as part of his sentence, which will allow him to leave the jail during the day to go to work. He also received two days of credit toward his sentence for time already served.
His sentence was set to start Thursday, according to online court records.
Poynette police said shortly after the shooting that the 7-year-old victim suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her thigh. Police also said a boy under the age of 10 shot the girl.
The girl was expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
