MADISON, Wis. — Thousands of people spent much of Thursday in the dark after several inches of heavy snow fell overnight, knocking out power and toppling tree branches onto power lines.
MG&E’s outage map reported more than 1,000 customers without power as of 8 a.m. Thursday, including larger outages near the Arboretum, the far west side of Madison, Shorewood Hills, and Middleton.
By 8:45 p.m. Thursday, all of the company’s customers had had power restored.
Alliant Energy also reported hundreds of outages in southern Wisconsin Thursday morning and more than 10,000 outages statewide. A spokesperson for Alliant Energy said areas around Baraboo, Portage and Spring Green are among the places seeing the most outages Thursday.
As of 8:45 p.m. Thursday, more than 3,100 customers in Wisconsin were still in the dark, including 670 in Sauk County, 598 in Juneau County and 327 in Columbia County.
MG&E crews were also working to restore power around the city Thursday morning. A spokesperson for the energy provider said crews were working as “quickly and safely as possible” to restore power to customers.
About four inches of snow fell in the Madison area overnight, but snow totals were higher to the north and west.
More than 90 school districts across southern Wisconsin, including the Madison Metropolitan School District, closed or delayed classes Thursday morning.
