MADISON, Wis. — Mid-pandemic, the Kight family lost the roof over their heads.
“We had pretty much run out of options; we didn’t have anywhere to go,” said Percy Kight.
Despite losing both of their cars, the family is on the upswing. After six months in a motel, they found a home and enrolled their kids in daycare. But with five kids to care for and inadequate wages, with the help of the United Way, News 3 Now and St. Vincent de Paul stepped in to help.
“We wouldn’t turn anything down; nothing is looked at as big or small.” “Just whatever comes from your heart,” said Percy.
Their most pressing need was for… necessities, clothes, food, furniture, and toiletries. We brought that and then some. After seeing the 20 boxes full of all the items they so desperately needed, Percy said, “Ahhh, I didn’t expect all of this to come.” Maybe one or two boxes. It’s like 20, so yeah. I’m a happy camper.”
Those 20 boxes had every household essential you’d ever need. Pots and pans, blankets, towels, toilet paper, you name it.
“We also provided vouchers to the Kight family for clothing… for them and their three kids.” “And we provide a voucher for bigger stuff like a sofa, a living room, a chair, a kitchen table and chairs, and those types of things,” said Chris Kane, the senior director of client services at the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Madison.
And we couldn’t forget the kids. They received toys and more to set them up for success.
“I think this is how change happens, right?” It’s the little sprinkles of joy and happiness, right? This is how we change the world, so Yeah, thanks for giving,” said Julie Knade, the site director of the East Madison Playing Field, the daycare that recommended the Kight family.
“I’m overwhelmed; I’m really overwhelmed.” I’ve been cheering for, what, about 10 minutes now. “Yeah, I’m really overwhelmed,” Percy said.
