MADISON, Wis. — The former owner of the Waunakee Veterinary Clinic, who is accused of abusing animals, had an initial appearance in court Monday, online court records show.
Dr. Wesley Arnett, 45, is charged with six counts of intentionally mistreating animals. During his appearance Monday, his signature bond was set at $500 per case.
A criminal complaint alleged that Dr. Arnett kicked and struck animals in his care several times at the clinic, which he owned since 2007. The clinic is under new ownership and Dr. Arnett is no longer a staff member.
As a condition of his bond Dr. Arnett is barred from treating or handling any live animal besides those for whom he is a primary caretaker. He cannot have any contact with the Waunakee Veterinary Clinic or its employees, and he cannot have any contact with any of the owners of the animals listed in the complaint.
His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 31.
