SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) — A Waunakee woman will spend years in prison for a vehicular homicide conviction.
Carrie Herbst, 42, was sentenced Friday, according to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.

According to the district attorney, on October 3, 2021, Herbst left Interstate 94 east briefly near Warrens before making a U-turn and driving back up the ramp. Herbst was recorded on DOT cameras driving west in the eastbound lanes of I-94.
Herbst crashed head-on with another vehicle, killing a 29-year-old man and seriously injuring two others. The crash set off a chain reaction of other collisions.
Police found open intoxicants in the vehicle. Herbst’s BAC was 0.177, more than two times the legal limit.
Herbst will spend eight years confined, with an additional 10 years of extended supervision. After completing the extended supervision, she will be put on probation for 15 more years. She will be 75 years old upon completion of her sentence.
