MADISON, Wis. — A Tamiflu shortage plaguing pharmacies across the country may last a few more months, an SSM Health doctor warned Tuesday.
The antiviral drug helps people who have onset flu symptoms, but stores are having a tough time keeping it in stock due to supply issues.
“It’s not as available as we would like it to be, not anywhere close to it,” Dr. David Ottenbaker, SSM Health’s vice president of primary care services, said. “In years past we’ve had some minor shortages but nothing like this, and we expect this to be during the whole influenza season for us. This is not a one- or two-week shortage; it will probably go throughout the whole influenza season this year.”

Two of the country’s largest pharmacy chains — CVS and Walgreens — are now limiting purchases of ibuprofen and acetaminophen for children because of short supply and high demand.
