JANESVILLE, Wis. — Medical examiners have identified the two people killed in a fire in Janesville last week.
The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Department says 55-year-old Johanna Tabor and 35-year-old Sarah Benoit of Janesville died when the home on the 2300 block of Hawaii Drive caught fire at about 1:14 p.m. on Friday, December 16.

Tabor was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire, while Benoit died at the hospital, the medical examiner said. The cause and manner of their deaths is still pending as additional testing is underway.

Fire officials say the first firefighters on scene tried to get inside and locate the victims, but were ultimately driven out by the initial heat of the fire. Firefighters were eventually able to get inside and pull Benoit from the home. Tabor was found shortly after, but had already passed away.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Janesville Police Department and Janesville Fire Department.
