MADISON, Wis. — There are always lots of things to do around the holidays, but the American Red Cross is asking donors to keep giving blood on their to-do lists.
Red Cross officials said many people who would usually give blood or platelets put off doing so until the new year because of travel and other obligations. However, the need for blood and platelets does not take a break.
“We canceled two of our larger blood drives in the state, you know, the one here in m=Madison and then we also closed all of our blood donor centers and so we have about 900 uncollected units of blood from that day,” said Kyle Kriegl, the executive director of the American Red Cross of Southwest Wisconsin.
To combat weather-related shortages, the Red Cross is asking anyone who is able to donate blood or platelets, especially those with type O blood. The Red Cross will have donation opportunities across southern Wisconsin over the next week, and anyone who donates between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 will receive a free long-sleeved t-shirt while supplies last.
“One donation can save up to three lives, and so that’s why it’s so important to give back, and as I said the need for blood is constant, it doesn’t take a holiday,” Kriegl said.

“We’ve got our east and west side donation centers, we also have some big drives even going on this week in the Madison area from Middleton to Monona, so there’s a lot of opportunities, make an appointment and give that precious gift of life back to folks,” Kriegl said.
