MADISON, Wis. — A local nonprofit organization supporting four-legged friends with cancer presented a $25,000 grant Thursday to the UW Kids Cancer Research Fund.
The grant from Czar’s Promise will fund a canine immunotherapy research study hosted by Dr. Christian Capitini and Monica Cho. The two have been looking into the link between canines and humans diagnosed with cancer.
The team will use the money to treat eight dogs in the pilot program with engineered cells in a process that would be comparable to a phase one clinical trial in humans.
Data from the trial will pave the way to launch it in humans.
“In working with families every day whose canines or felines are on this cancer journey, it is hoping that someday this research will lead to technologies and protocols that improve the diagnostics, improve the treatment options and ultimately give the additional gift of time,” Beth Vinney, the founder of Czar’s Promise, said.
The next stage is to put the gene-engineered cells into the dogs for treatment.
