MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Medical Examiner’s office has determined Badger Ridge Middle School Principal Beth Steffen died as a result of the injuries she suffered when a driver hit her with a car earlier this week.
The medical examiner says Steffen died shortly after being taken to the hospital. A memorial service has been scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 15.
Steffen, 56, was hit while walking along South Syene Road at about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Police have said the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene after the crash and has been cooperating.
Steffen was appointed as interim principal at Badger Ridge Middle School last year after previously serving as the Language, Literacy and Equity specialist at the school. She had a long career in education, previously serving as principal at Edgewood High School in Madison, assistant principal at La Follette High School, a literacy coach and English teacher in the Madison Metropolitan School District and as an English teacher at Beloit Memorial High School.
Authorities in Fitchburg have not indicated if any charges have been filed as a result of the crash. The investigation was still ongoing as of early this week.
