LAKE DELTON, Wis. — The Delton Fire Department honored a kindergartener Tuesday who helped save her family’s lives during an October fire.
Charlie Stupinean received the department’s first-ever Junior Firefighter Award.
Last fall, firefighters visited Lake Delton Elementary School, where Stupinean is a student, to discuss fire safety and prevention. At the end of the lesson, students were asked to go home and work on a fire escape plan with their families.
Stupinean did just that, and only a week later the family was forced to put her plan into action.
When the family’s house caught on fire, Stupinean’s mother used the plan to safely get everyone out and reunite at their designated meeting spot.
““I truly believe the plan we made and [the firefighters’] visit to the school saved our daughters and niece,” Stupinean’s mother Rebekah said.
“The brave actions of Charlie completely reminded me of what a true hero is,” Delton Fire Department and Dells Delton EMS member Shawna Bongard said.
Bongard was the one who asked students to make escape plans as part of the department’s fire prevention work last year.
