MADISON, Wis. — Law enforcement officers arrested three people and recovered a stolen vehicle Thursday as part of an effort to crack down on vehicle thefts in the Madison area, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said.
In a news release, the sheriff’s office said officers from more than a dozen agencies took part in a “joint proactive traffic operation” over a four-hour period on Thursday focused on stolen vehicles and related crimes.
As part of the effort, officers arrested a 20-year-old man on tentative charges of eluding and reckless driving as well as multiple outstanding warrants. According to the release, officers also found a handgun in the vehicle he was driving.
Officers also arrested a 33-year-old man on tentative charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of THC.
In another stop, officers recovered a stolen vehicle that was being driven by a juvenile. That driver ran from officers but was caught a short time later. While searching the stolen vehicle, officers found a fake handgun, the release said.
Online court records did not list formal charges for the two adults arrested in the operation as of late Thursday evening; only the 20-year-old was listed on the Dane County Jail’s resident roster. The release did not provide the juvenile’s name or list any tentative charges they may face.
News 3 Now is not naming the adults arrested at this time as part of a policy not to name people accused of crimes until they have been formally charged in court. Click here to learn more about the policy.
