MADISON, Wis. — A photography exhibition exploring the connection between gender and sexual identity with rural living opened Friday in Madison.
“Queering Rural Spaces” will be on display at the Arts + Literature Laboratory, 111 S. Livingston Street #100, through March 4, with a closing reception scheduled for Feb. 25.
“It’s important to show the breadth and diversity of people making their lives across the country,” curator Andy Adams said. “This exhibition in particular takes a look at queer Americans that are settling and making a way of life in the rural parts of the country.”
Artist Sarah Stellino said it started as a personal exploration as she and her wife contemplated whether to settle down in Madison or move back to a farm.
“I think a fair number of people have experienced that the community might not be as visible, but it is still very strong and supportive; you just have to be a little bit creative in finding that community,” she said.
