FITCHBURG, Wis. — The City of Fitchburg made some changes this week meant to increase safety along South Syene Road.
The work comes two weeks after Badger Ridge Middle School principal Beth Steffen was struck by a vehicle and killed while walking her dog along the road.

In a statement Tuesday, Fitchburg City Council President Randy Udell said a pair of speed-boards have been placed near the scene of the crash. Police will also increase patrol and visibility in the area.
People living in the area have voiced their concerns about safety for years. Those voices have only grown louder since Steffen’s death. Plans are in the works to redevelop the road to make it safer, but the project has been delayed. Work on the road near the scene of the crash is not expected to start until 2024.
“I will continue to encourage City Staff to evaluate that timeline as well as evaluate all other measures that may be taken in the meantime, such as reducing the speed limit,” Udell said.
Police plan to host a community meeting in the area later this month.
