The Dubuque Fire Department handled about 50 fewer calls in 2023 than in each of the two previous years, according to city officials. The department fielded 7,753 calls last year, a decrease of 0.6% from the 7,800 calls recorded in both 2022 and 2021. Of the total calls received in 2023, 6,277 of them, or 81.0%, were for EMS-related needs. That represented a similar number to 2022, when 80.6% of recorded calls were for EMS, and a slight increase from 2021, when that percentage was 78.9%.
