ELROY, Wis. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Tomah man on multiple charges around 9 p.m. on Saturday after he attempted to drive away from police, struck a deer and stopped abruptly causing the deputy’s vehicle to hit the back of the his vehicle.
An incident report, the Sheriff’s Office said a deputy saw Anthony D. Springman, 22, traveling approximately 95 mph in a 55 mph speed zone in the Kendall area. The deputy attempted to stop Springman but he drove off to Juneau County.
Upon entering the City of Elroy, Springman shut off the vehicle’s headlights and continued to attempt to elude the deputy, according to the report. Springman’s vehicle then struck a deer, which caused the hood latch to fail and the vehicle’s hood to open.
Springman stopped abruptly causing the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office vehicle to strike the back of Springman’s vehicle, both sustaining moderate damage.
Springman surrendered and was arrested with assistance from the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office and Elroy Police Department. He was taken to the Monroe County Jail and booked with the following crimes: vehicle operator flee/elude an officer, 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety, bailjumping, and possession of THC and drug paraphernalia.
Springman was also issued traffic citations for speeding in a 55 mph zone, operating while under the influence (restricted controlled substance), operating while suspended and operating without required lamps lighted.
There were no injuries as a result of the pursuit. Elroy police are conducting the investigation regarding the traffic collision between Springman’s vehicle and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.
