MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Tuesday to 43 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, a release said.
23-year-old Francesco Anglin was first convicted for possessing a firearm as a felon on July 17, 2019 and sentenced to one year in prison. The sentence was stayed for three years of probation and 30 days in jail, although Anglin’s probation was revoked based on the federal offense.
On Nov. 12 of that same year, Lydia Molina attempted to buy a handgun for Anglin at a gun store in Sun Prairie. While in the store, Anglin handled and possessed a semiautomatic weapon, purchased an extended magazine and gave Molina $20 to pay for the gun. He later returned the extended magazine for a cash refund when Molina’s background check was delayed.
Police discovered that Molina was purchasing handguns for Anglin, who went on to sell them to others. Molina pleaded guilty to attempting to make a straw purchase and was sentenced to two years of probation.
Chief U.S. District Judge James Peterson, who sentenced Anglin, found that he had been providing illegal firearms to other which posed a significant danger to the community. The Judge gave Anglin a greater sentence than recommended in the sentencing guidelines.
The Sun Prairie Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation that resulted in Anglin’s charge. The charge was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a U.S. Justice Department’s program. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan.
