SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — The challenge to raise money for a good cause is now underway.
Major Melissa Shiels with the Salvation Army accepted a challenge from the Salvation Army’s National Commander this week to raise as much money as possible for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. Shiels will be ringing bells at the Sun Prairie Walmart from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday.
Requests for services are up 150% this year while bell-ringing shifts are down 50% of where they were last year. Shiels said the competition comes at a vital moment in the Red Kettle Campaign.
“I don’t think anybody realized the Covid situation was going to last and how much havoc it was going to run our community,” Shiels said. “Although the need has been high we have been pulling out all the stops to help people. People are going above and beyond to help their neighbor.”
The winner of the bell ringing challenge will join the National Commander for the national Red Kettle Kickoff at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving game in 2021. Although the prize is nice, Shiels said the real winners are the people they serve who will get a warm bed and a hot meal.
