One inmate is hospitalized and another has been released as the number of active COVID-19 cases in the Dane County jail is at 74 on Friday, according to a spokesperson. According to an update from Public Health Madison and Dane County, it’s the site of the largest cluster in a single facility in the county.
The outbreak started roughly two weeks ago in two separate jail facilities, quickly doubling as new inmates coming in tested positive for the coronavirus. PHMDC reported 81 total cases over the past 14-day period; the Dane County Sheriff’s Office says the number of active cases fluctuates as some inmates enter or leave the jail.
“Just as numbers spiked significantly in a short period of time, we do expect over the next two weeks we will see a significant decrease,” a spokesperson for the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said.
