SHOREWOOD HILLS, Wis. — A Shorewood Hills man had his shotgun and hunting jacket stolen after a thief got into his SUV overnight, according to an incident report.
A homeowner on Blackhawk Drive contacted police early Monday morning regarding the theft. The man said his vehicle was both parked and unlocked.
Madison police said at least 83 cases where firearms were stolen from parked vehicles have happened throughout the year.
There have been more than 1,500 reported cases of thefts from parked vehicles between January and November. That’s a noticeable increase from the city’s five-year average of 1,210 thefts from vehicles within the same time period.
The police department has encouraged the public to keep their vehicles locked at all times and added that drivers should not house firearms in their vehicles, especially overnight.
