SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — A vigil is planned in Sun Prairie on Friday night to honor the military pilot killed during a jet crash this week.
Community members are gathering in the Courtyard at Cannery Square around 5 p.m. Those attending are asked to wear a mask, practice social distancing, stay in their family pods and bring their own candles if possible.
The vigil will also be broadcast on the city’s downtown speakers for anyone wishing to remain in their vehicles.
The Wisconsin Air National Guard identified Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones as the pilot in Tuesday’s crash.
He leaves beyond a wife and two young children.
Attendees will also have the option to write or leave a note of support for his family.
Jones was the only person onboard a F-16 Fighting Falcon when it crashed Tuesday night while performing a training mission in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He was part of the 115th Fighter Wing based in Madison.
The United States Air Force is now handling the investigation into this crash.
