MOUNT HOREB, Wis. – As winter carries warnings of potentially dark months ahead, with limited options to leave the house during the pandemic, the cold weather brings a few new opportunities to get out safely.
Falling snow and upcoming cold temperatures are more than welcome at Tyrol Basin Ski and Snowboard Area.
“Snow usually makes us more busy,” owner Nathan McGree said.
There’s no question this year has been an uphill battle for many.
“People are wanting to get out,” McGree said. “They’re going stir crazy.”
He hopes the hills at Tyrol Basin can offer people the lift they need. They started their early season with limited hours at the beginning of the month.
“People are super excited to get out,” McGree said. “We’ve seen more (people) brand new to skiing and snowboarding than ever before, especially early season.”
The year brings new precautions.
“Make sure you have a mask,” McGree said. “If you don’t have a mask, you’re not getting on the hill.”
Tyrol Basin has upped their sanitizing procedures, including for equipment. The resort has also changed lift line protocol to keep people apart, clearing the way for activities that are socially distant by nature.
“The running joke around here is if you’re closer than six feet together on skis, you have bigger problems than COVID,” McGree said.
They stick at 25% capacity inside buildings and limit groups to 10 people.
During what could be a dark winter, McGree said these activities give light to hope.
“We feel it’s so critical, especially for people now, to get outside and get fresh air,” McGree said. “We want to be the positive thing — a light at the end of the tunnel.”
Our early season hours are in effect. Come get some runs in this weekend!

Tyrol Basin is open until 9 p.m. this Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with expanded hours coming in the weeks to follow. Next weekend, McGree expects to start snow tubing, which he said has received a lot of interest already this year, as well.
